1966 Omega Pocket Watch In Stainless Steel

Why This Watch Matters

While the brand was gearing up to go to the moon, Omega also stuck to their roots with classic pocket watches like this example.

The Full Story

If you've ever wanted to dip your toes into the world of collecting vintage pocket watches, an archetypal example like this 1960s Omega is a great place to start. Aesthetically, it's just gorgeous, with a creamy eggshell dial featuring Arabic numerals at three, nine, and 12 o'clock; a steel tone handset; an attractively angled bow; and a small seconds display that is minimalist in design. The entire look of this watch screams mid-century design in a way that many pocket watches we come across do not. The Omega branding is minimalist, the sub-seconds display is graduated delicately, all of these details come together to give a sense of classic watch design such as what is found on some Patek Philippe Calatravas from this period.

It's not just great looking, this pocket watch also serves as an excellent example of Omega's historic watch manufacturing prowess. The movement inside is the caliber 161, a stem-winding workhorse that Omega produced from the 1930s to the 1960s. Either under the naming of caliber 38.5L or 161, like we have here, it's believed nearly one million pocket watches called on this movement over three decades, with many ending up in the pockets of soldiers during World War II.

Favored for their legibility, accuracy, and robust performance, mid-century pocket watches like this Omega are a testament to the inherent value of purpose-built design and engineering.

Things We Love:

- Remarkable mid-century design
- Large stainless steel case
- Applied dial details

Things To Know:

- Light scratches on case

This Omega is in overall great condition. The case appears to be probably unpolished and it's in strong condition with scratches.

The dial is in good condition with some patina and a few light scratches/ marks. The small seconds sub-dial has developed patina and has some wear and scratches. There is some wear within the counter form at nine and in the two at "12." The edge of the dial has some wear. The hands and hour markers have developed some light patina.

The dial, case, and movement are all signed by Omega. The bow around the crown is still tight. The watch is in overall remarkable condition for its age.
