1984 Rolex Datejust Ref. 16014 With Black Dial

Why This Watch Matters

There's nothing more iconic in the Rolex catalog than the Datejust, dissenting opinions welcome.

The Full Story

The Datejust has remained Rolex’s mainstay model since the brand introduced it in 1945. When it comes to popularity, the steel Oyster case and Jubilee bracelet combination is at the top of the pecking order for its sleek appearance and versatility.

Finding a clean black-dialed Datejust in today's vintage market is downright difficult. For our money, this is one of the best iterations of the model Rolex has ever produced – and the market reflects that in terms of collectors holding on to examples and prices. In the reference 16014, you get the classic fluted bezel as well as a few modern amenities in a quick-set date and a solid-link Jubilee bracelet.

What We Love And What You Should Know

Things We Love:

- Matte black dial
- Fluted bezel and Jubilee combo
- Quick-set date
- Nice lume color

Things To Know:

- Scratches on lugs and case
- Patina on hands

This ref. 16014 is in overall excellent and attractive condition. The case shows some light scratches particularly on the top sides of the lugs like at 11 o'clock. The case appears to have been polished. The back of the lugs and caseback have scratches. The fluted bezel is sharp and has developed a very slight patina.

The black matte dial is in good condition with light patina throughout. The applied hour markers have developed a patina over the years. The lume on the dial has turned to an even light buttery yellow color. Most of the lume plots have remained full, and only a couple show signs of slight degradation. The hands have developed some patina. The lume on the hands has developed some dark patina throughout. Overall the lume on the dial and in the hands work well together.

The solid-link Jubilee bracelet is in overall great condition with some stretch. The clasp is marked "I" indicating it was produced in 1984 which matches the case dating to 1984. The bracelet clasp appears to have been polished and has a shiny finish with scratches, but the coronet remains prominent. The case, dial, movement, crown, and bracelet are signed by Rolex. This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
