1975 Rolex Reference 1625 ‘Thunderbird’ In Yellow Gold

Why This Watch Matters

Opulence meets military functionality in this all yellow-gold Rolex Turn-O-Graph "Thunderbird."

The Full Story

Technically a Datejust, but modified with a bi-directional numbered bezel such as the one found on the toolish Submariner, GMT-Master, or Sea-Dweller, this Thunderbird is the ultimate in elegant sportswear. The bezel was an addition incorporated in the watch’s design in 1955, and was utilized by the U.S. Air Force "Thunderbirds," who specialized in aerial acrobatics. Though technically the model is called the Turn-O-Graph, it was always referred to as the "Thunderbird" for the American market to capitalize on the patriotic appeal of those high-flying airmen. The reference 1625, the second iteration of the Thunderbird, was only ever manufactured in full yellow gold or in two-tone steel with a yellow or white gold bezel. In addition to the sharp 18k yellow-gold bezel, this example has a gold champagne colored dial and a period-correct President bracelet.

What we Love and What You Should Know

This 42-year-old watch is in exemplary condition. There is little sign of aging to the dial or handset, and the tritium lume plots have aged well and match the lume on the hands. This watch would have originally been offered on an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet, but a special request might have been made to fit a President bracelet to the watch instead. In any case, the bracelet code dates it to 1975 as well, and shows some stretch consistent with age. This is a stunning vintage Rolex that looks even better on the wrist.
