1960s Heuer Carrera Reference 2447N

Why This Watch Matters

The Heuer Carrera is one of those utilitarian objects whose inherently good design allowed it to make the leap from practical tool to iconic design. As with any vintage Carrera, it looks killer on the wrist.

The Full Story

It’s hard to pick out any one thing that makes this such a classic, because there is no one thing – Jack Heuer prioritized legibility as the guiding principle of watch design at Heuer when he ruled the roost, and strict adherence to putting utility ahead of other considerations remained a part of Heuer’s design philosophy throughout the history of the model's production.

Unlike many cult watches that took time to find an audience (like the Royal Oak, for instance), the Carrera was an immediate hit, with a simple, clean design that captured the spirit of motorsports in the 1960s (the first Heuer Carrera was shown at Basel in 1963). The reference 2447N we’ve found for you here is a wonderful example of what makes the Carrera the Carrera – a three-register black dial in wonderful condition that shows great attention to detail. This is the "second execution" of the dial and hands, with white paint on the markers making the watch easier to read than the first execution version. Of course, there is also the famed Carrera case featuring aggressive, angled lugs. This is a classic that really deserves to be called a classic, and a great entry point to collecting both vintage Heuer and vintage chronographs in general.
