1958 Enicar Sherpa Ultrasonic
Why This Watch Matters
This Enicar Ultrasonic has great character with exaggerated luminous indexes, thick hands, and a quirky seconds hand.
The Full Story
The Sherpa line from Enicar was introduced in 1956. There were numerous exploration-inspired models produced, especially after one of the watches was worn while climbing Mount Everest. While this version is not designated as a dive model, it has an uncanny similarity, with its bold luminous indexes and bayonet-type Super Compressor case by Ervin Piquerez (EPSA), noted by the indication Brevet #314962 on its caseback. The caseback has a clover-shape engraving with both the SeaPearl and Sherpa mentioned, perhaps because of this example being more of a transitional design. The black dial has a nice patina, and contrasts against the gilt writing beautifully, with the applied Enicar Saturn logo instead of the printed one that appears more often in later models. A fun fact about Enicar: The company name Enicar is the reverse of the company founder, Ariste Racine (1889-1958).

The watch appears to be preserved in original condition throughout. The case shows some surface scratches. The engraving on the caseback is still legible and shows noticeable scratches out the outer edges. The black surface of the dial shows light aging, especially in the center. The print on the dial is still prominent. The lume on the indexes and on the minute and hour hands has patinated uniformly. The unusual seconds hand is still intact, but the lume in some sections appears to have worn off. The crown is unsigned. The movement shows light scratches overall and is in running condition at this time.
