1950s Baume & Mercier Reference 1919 Triple-Calendar Chronograph With Moon-phase

Why This Watch Matters

The splendid balance between the chronograph, triple calendar, and moon-phase complications on the dial here is hard to beat.

The Full Story

A cousin of the celebrated Valjoux 72, the caliber Valjoux 88 is not your average manual-wind chronograph movement. Indeed, it also offers triple calendar and moon-phase complications, which explains the success that it enjoyed with so many brands, including Doxa and Baume & Mercier. And the layout of all these complications is quite irresistible, almost offering the same configuration as a Patek Philippe reference 1518 (except for the date hand with the Valjoux 88). The Baume & Mercier reference 1919 is a vintage watch that offers a lot, and with a lot of elegance.

What we Love and What You Should Know

The dial of this Baume & Mercier is stunning, and the mirrored indexes pop beautifully against it. It is extremely well balanced, offering a very intuitive reading of the different complications allowed for by the Valjoux 88 caliber. There are some minor aging marks to the minute sub-register on the right side of the dial, but they are barely noticeable. This attractive movement was recently serviced, so you can expect it to function well. The case comes with superficial scratches, but looks unpolished, judging by the bevels of the lugs and the depth of the reference number engravings on the caseback.
