1940s Universal Genève Uni-Compax Reference 12111 In 18k Gold

Why This Watch Matters

This 18k-yellow-gold Uni-Compax is well balanced across the board and enhanced by the sharp, elongated "Cornes de Vache" style lugs that make it wear much larger on the wrist.

The Full Story

There were so many fantastic chronographs produced by Universal Genève that it's difficult to choose a favorite. Many of them have a tool-watch feel, but this one is decidedly dressy. This example packs a punch in an unusual 18k-yellow-gold case, which you will definitely feel the weight of once you hold it in your hand. The standout feature is the elongated Cornes de Vache-style lugs; from the side, the added effect of the curves makes the case a sight to behold. To balance out the more dressy case, the silver dial is finished in a subtle, yet sophisticated, classic, two-register layout with dart indexes and gold-toned feuille hands to really pull the design together. This watch would look fantastic on a well-dressed man or woman, at a black tie event or for any slightly formal occasion. This rare design, particularly in this condition, should not be missed, as you don't see these come up often.

What we Love and What You Should Know

The case shows some light scratches overall and appears to be unpolished. The lugs are beautifully preserved and the sharp ends are still thick and sharp as well. The hallmarks are still visible on the side of the case, and the engraved numbers on the caseback are crisp as it gets. The crown and pushers appear to be original. The dial is in good vintage condition with a beautiful overall patina. There is some aging on the outer edges of the dial, with some vein-like lines between 10 and 12. The handset appears to be original. The movement shows some wear and scratches, but is in running condition with the chronograph starting, stopping, and resetting correctly at this time.
